If you have recently tried your hand in the wonderful world of online affiliate marketing, I congratulate you. You finally have decided to get off the fence and try this wonderful way of making money. As exciting as this prospect may be, I hope you’re going about it with clear eyes. I hope you have made your decision based on clear facts instead of hype.
Make no mistake about it, affiliate marketing and the whole concept of making money online comes with tremendous baggage. There are a lot of people who try to market it and spin it in a way that completely distorts its real value.
I’m not saying you’re not going to make money with affiliate marketing. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying that at all. What I’m saying is if you attack this issue or approach it with completely unrealistic expectations and assumptions, chances are you will fail. Just like with everything else in life, you only fail if you quit. Unfortunately with affiliate marketing it doesn’t take many instances where you’re not making any money for several straight days for you to conclude that there’s no money in it.
It’s very easy for you to just throw your hands up and quit. I don’t want that to happen to you. I don’t want you to fail. So I’ve written this blog post to give you the number one piece of advice I would give to anybody starting out with affiliate marketing. This can make or break your affiliate marketing career. If anything, this is the kind of advice I wish somebody gave me when I first started.
My advice: your attitude determines your altitude
If there’s any one advice I could give you, it is this: your attitude determines your altitude. There are all sorts of advice people can give you. They can tell you about developing an audience first before you develop a website or a business. They can tell you about filtering your target audience. They can tell you all sorts of stuff, but unfortunately most of that advice is technical. Most of that advice isn’t really as important as your attitude. If you come into this game with the wrong attitude chances are your affiliate marketing business will remain small.
Don’t have any illusions about it, you’re engaged in business. This is not a hobby. It’s not something that you do for fun. This is not something that you do on the side. While you’re more than welcome to think of affiliate marketing in those terms, I’m telling you right now: if you think in those terms chances are you’re not going to get the kind of results that you’re looking for.
Chances are you’re not going to make as much money as you’d hoped. If you want to really make significant amounts of money, you have to have the right attitude. Your attitude, once again, determines your altitude.
Wrong attitude sinks your chances of success
There are many wrong attitudes you can assume. They all have one thing in common: they can sabotage your chances of success. It really is that simple. If you assume that making money online would be easy and won’t take much investment or effort, you’re going to be in for a nasty shock. In fact, the shock can be so nasty and so crushing that you would want to quit. Just like I said, the only way to fail is to quit.
Another attitude you can take is that the world owes you success. In other words, if you spend some money on somebody’s blueprint or framework, somehow, some way you’re entitled to all these dollars. Again, if that’s your attitude you are only positioning yourself for ultimate failure. You have to remember that there is really only one correct attitude. That attitude is the attitude of a student.
Assume the attitude of student
If you’re a student everything is brand new. If you’re a student you expect things to be difficult at first. If you’re a student you expect to go through the process and learn. In other words, if you have the mindset of a student you increase the likelihood that you would be successful in affiliate marketing or any other activity for that matter. Unfortunately, most people look at their jobs and all the other things that truly matter in the lives without the attitude of a student.
In many cases, they think they would have to start at the top. Other people have this entitlement mentality that somehow, the system owes them something and that they deserve to succeed even though they did not put in the right kind of effort, time and sacrifice. Do you see what’s wrong with this picture? Do you see what’s wrong with all these different attitudes?
On the other hand, if you assume the attitude of a student you are looking at it from a position of curiosity. By simply pursuing your curiosity and seeking to learn then you increase the likelihood that you will do whatever it takes for however long it takes to finally put everything together so you can earn what you need to earn. That’s how it works. It may be simple but most people are completely lost regarding this attitude.
Look at everything as a puzzle
When you look at the whole prospect of affiliate marketing and making money online from the perspective of a student, everything is reduced to a puzzle. You look at things in incremental terms. Just like a video game is often played one level at a time, you look at your affiliate marketing business as a series of levels.
You start out with level one where you learn how to crawl, then you know how to walk. You then go on to level two and three and then you figure out how to run. In other words, you let a natural sequence take place and this enables you to put in the right kind of energy at the right time so you can achieve incremental success. This all then has a cumulative effect which then leads to ultimate success. Do you see how all this works out?
Stay focused on the big picture
By looking at everything as a student, you see the big picture. You see how everything flows into each other and you see the sequence. This then increases your likelihood of overall success. This mindset is what separates people who are simply looking to get rich quickly from people who are looking to build a business.
Make no mistake about it, what you’re doing when you get into affiliate marketing is you’re building a business. You’re not building something else. You’re not building anything else. You’re building a business. The sooner you wrap your mind around this reality, the sooner you’re paving your way to your ultimate success.
However, if you dance around that problem because you’re lazy or you’d rather look at it as some sort of fun game then what you’re really achieving is postponing your ultimate success.
You should just get rid of all of this distracting attitude and focus instead on tackling affiliate marketing and making money online from the perspective of somebody who’s there to learn. If you’re there to learn and not make instant millions overnight you increase the likelihood that you’d be successful.
If you’re there to learn instead of assuming that the system will somehow magically work itself out even though you don’t put in enough effort, time and energy then you will probably succeed. I hope I’ve made my point clear. You don’t want to sabotage yourself by assuming the wrong attitude.
